2018 NDAA Reported from Committee, Reflects Efforts by McEachin

Press Release

WASHINGTON – Wednesday night, Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) voted to report the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) out of the House Armed Services Committee.

“The federal government’s most basic responsibility is to provide for our security. Timely passage of a national defense authorization bill is an essential part of that work. We need to ensure that our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines have the resources they need to complete their missions and come home safely, said Congressman Donald McEachin (VA-04). “We cannot meet that goal unless the Armed Services Committee advances a bill.”

During the full committee markup, Mr. McEachin cosponsored the amendment that will require a report detailing the vulnerabilities climate change creates for military installations around the world. Mr. McEachin spoke in favor of supplying information about naturalization to the permanent residents who bravely serve in the military, and spoke in opposition to an amendment that aimed to prevent transgender individuals from serving in the military.

“The marked-up bill acknowledges that climate change affects our security, and directs the Department of Defense to study its probable effects. It ensures that non-citizens who serve in our military, risking life and limb for the United States, are given full information about their pathway to citizenship. I was proud to co-sponsor these needed amendments,” said Congressman McEachin.

The bill also reflects Mr. McEachin’s successful efforts, in partnership with other members, to address specific needs and challenges within the Fourth Congressional District.

“I am especially pleased that the NDAA supports expanded research into the kind of sea-level rise and recurrent flooding that threaten bases and communities throughout Hampton Roads; ensures that procurement of future aircraft carriers is timely and cost-efficient; and mandates comprehensive planning to improve aging facilities like Norfolk Naval Shipyard,” said Congressman McEachin.

The NDAA, H.R. 2810, passed out of the House Armed Services Committee late Wednesday night and is expected to be considered by the full House of Representatives.

“Like any major piece of legislation, this year’s NDAA contains compromises. I do not agree with every provision — but I am pleased we made positive changes in committee. I look forward to continuing that work — and fighting for greater equality and inclusion in our military — in the days and weeks ahead,” added Congressman McEachin.
