Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman McEachin announced three grants to provide Virginia state agencies with resources to help citizens.

The first grant to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to help DEQ research and remediate former defense sites which are hazardous waste sites. A second grant is for the Virginia Department of Public Health to transition the state safe drinking water system to the national system (SDWIS). The third grant will support the Virginia Board of Health for hospital and emergency readiness.

Congressman McEachin said about these grants:

“I am pleased to see these issues being addressed to create a safer Virginia and a cleaner environment. Hazardous waste sites can leak, impacting drinking water and poisoning soil so remediation is critical for public health. One of the important steps in keeping drinking water clean and healthy is a strong reporting system. By switching to a national reporting system, Virginians have access to more information and a more complete data base.

“Finally, as our healthcare system struggles to keep up with demand, this grant can help hospitals work more efficiently and improve emergency readiness.

“I very much appreciate these resources helping constituents in my district.”
