McEachin Cosponsors the PRIVATE Act
WASHINGTON – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) is a proud cosponsor of H.R. 2052, the PRIVATE Act.
This bill offers an amendment to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which would prohibit the unauthorized broadcasting or distribution of intimate, personal images by members of the United States Armed Forces.
“This legislation will help protect service members from the kind of egregious acts we saw earlier this spring when Marines were found to have posted intimate and inappropriate pictures of service women without their knowledge and consent. This behavior is unacceptable under any circumstances, disrespectful and demeaning to women, but it poses a particularly dangerous problem when it surfaces within military ranks,” said Congressman McEachin. “Our members of the service need to be able to trust each other, to know that they can have confidence in each other, and to feel assured that they are watching out for each other. These are basic precepts both for their safety and for the protection of our nation. The transmitting of personal intimate photos without the knowledge of the victim undermines all these necessary concepts and diminishes the effectiveness of our military.
“As a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the son of a veteran, I am proud to have this opportunity to stand up for women, for our military and, frankly, for our values,” added Congressman McEachin.
