McEachin on Disappointing Proposed Funding Levels for Arts Programs

March 23, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON - Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) released the following statement about the proposed level of spending for arts programs indicated in the President’s budget blueprint:

“Far beyond numbers, the arts enrich the economic, educational, and cultural life of all Americans. Nearly five million Americans work in arts and culture industries, which contribute 730 billion dollars to our economy. In Virginia alone, arts organizations employ almost 700,000 people, serve 1.4 million youth through arts education, generate $23 billion in revenue from arts tourism, and were awarded just under $180,000 for local arts projects across our great 4th Congressional District. By reducing the budget from the FY17 level of spending, President Trump’s budget proposal to utterly eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts threatens not only  the essential cultural role the arts play in serving our nation’s communities, but will dismantle their contribution to our economic engine. Once again, this budget does not make America great again.”
