Press Release

RICHMOND – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04), joined more than 190 members of the U.S. House of Representatives to introduce the Equality Act of 2017.

“In 2017, no American should ever be forced to live with discrimination and bigotry. But that’s the reality for millions of LGBT Americans,” said Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04). “I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing the Equality Act of 2017 as a continuation of my work in the Virginia General Assembly. I fought at the state level for legislation that would reduce systemic discrimination against LGBT Americans and I do not plan to ease up on this fight at the federal level.”

The Equality Act ensures that the same protections already extended to other protected classes are equally available to LGBT Americans. This bill amends existing federal civil rights laws to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in education, employment, housing, credit, Federal jury service, public accommodations, and the use of Federal funds.
