McEachin on Need to End Documented Disparities in Student Treatment

March 27, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON - Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) today sent a letter to Secretary Betsy DeVos requesting that the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights investigate documented disparities in the treatment of students within Virginia's Fourth Congressional District. He released this statement announcing the letter:

“Discrimination is always wrong — but the injustice is magnified when victims are young and innocent. Schools have a responsibility to help and protect all our children — no exceptions. Unfair, unwarranted disparities in student treatment betray parents’ trust, and they do lasting harm to the students themselves.

“Today, I called on the federal Department of Education to investigate documented disparities in student treatment at Fourth Congressional District schools. I will not stand idly by while our children are hurt and mistreated.

“I have worked to address these challenges since my time as a state legislator, and I intend to continue that work in Congress. I am hopeful that Secretary DeVos will act on my request and investigate thoroughly — but I intend to keep fighting regardless of her choice.”
