McEachin Statement on Final Passage of Security Minibus
WASHINGTON – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued this statement following final passage of H.R. 3219, the Make America Secure Appropriations Act or "security minibus":
"This bill invests in bad ideas and cuts funding for essential protections. It seeks to spend $1.6 billion on President Trump's divisive and unnecessary border wall – funding that would come not from Mexico, but from American taxpayers’ pockets. The bill recklessly makes brutal, shortsighted cuts to clean energy and advanced energy research; provides for the rollback of water quality rules that are essential to protecting public health; and makes America less secure. This unacceptable legislation would lead to a massively irresponsible – and completely avoidable – defense sequester.
"I am deeply disappointed that my Republican colleagues have chosen such a reckless path to appropriate funds. Building an economy that works for all Americans requires hard work. I am ready and willing to work in good faith on spending bills that fund important priorities and move America forward – but I will never support the cuts and shortsighted choices in this bill."
Background: H.R. 3219, the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, includes funding for the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Energy, the Army Corps of Engineers, agencies of the Department of Interior, Legislative Branch, and several independent agencies.
