McEachin Statement on Passage of NDAA Report
WASHINGTON – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued this statement following the House passage of the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report, H.R. 2810:
“I fight every day in Congress for commonsense policies that keep our country secure and support our men and women in uniform. This year’s NDAA is a compromise that, while far from perfect, takes essential steps to achieve both of those goals.
“The bill provides for a well-deserved 2.4 percent pay increase for our servicemembers. This bill will shore up our alliances, deter Russian aggression, and strengthen our efforts to combat terrorism. It requires our military to plan for threats posed by climate change proactively, makes real progress towards a larger and more robust Navy, and maintains important ‘Buy America’ standards that support well-paying jobs. I am pleased that this bill also excludes proposed harmful provisions and discriminatory language that would have targeted transgender servicemembers.
“Throughout the NDAA process, I fought for language that would benefit not just our country, but residents of the 4th Congressional District. I am pleased to see that much of the language was included in either the final bill or reports, including requirements that the military actively plan for climate change and sea level rise, language that moves us towards a more muscular Navy, provisions that will help ensure modernization of our public shipyards, and efforts to support appropriate Air Force training range consolidation.
“While a compromise, I am pleased to see real progress on so many issues, and I look forward to building on what we have accomplished in this year’s bill.”
