McEachin Statement on the Passing of Congressman Alcee Hastings
WASHINGTON – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued the following statement on the passing of his colleague, Congressman Alcee Hastings.
“Congress has lost a fearless champion for civil rights today with the passing of my brother, Congressman Alcee Hastings. We will remember his legacy of speaking truth to power in the People’s House, and I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the people of his beloved Congressional District in Florida.
“From the earliest days of his career in Florida’s courts to the halls of Congress in Washington, Congressman Hastings fought relentlessly with trademark wit and candor to demand justice for the marginalized and voiceless throughout a life dedicated to public service. In his final fight against cancer, he carried forward that same life-long determination, continuing to serve Florida and our nation with distinction even while battling such a horrible disease.
“I am grateful to have had the privilege to count Congressman Hastings as my Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brother, my colleague, and my friend. He was a gift to us all and we will deeply miss him.
“May he rest in power.”
