McEachin Supports Farmers Market in Local Food Desert
WASHINGTON – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) wrote a letter to the Department of Agriculture in support of Surry County’s Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) grant application.
“Funding awarded from the FMPP grant would help Surry County expand much-needed access to fresh produce,” said Congressman Donald McEachin. “The funds awarded under the FMPP grant application would help increase participation in the purchasing and selling of fresh produce by increasing awareness of and visitation to the farmers’ market, increasing vendor participation, and increasing the number of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) transactions.”
Surry County, with a population of 7,058, is located in an area declared a USDA Strike Force Zone. Improving needed access to healthy, fresh and local produce will improve the health and quality of life for the people of Surry County.
